The Writers' Bible: Trance GeminiNote (from RHW): This is the first conception for Trance. Your Trance (and our Trance for that matter) may vary. The last of Beka's prospectors is Trance Gemini, a young female alien of a species otherwise unknown in the Commonwealth's former sphere of influence. Trance doesn't like to talk about her people or her past, and Beka and her other crewmates have mostly given up asking. They don't even know her real name. The young alien offered "Trance Gemini" as a loose translation, but never told them what it was translated from. If Trance were human, you'd probably peg her age at nineteen. She has a somewhat elfish appearance, with delicate pointed ears and sharp human-like features. But she's definitely not human. Her skin color has a slight bluish cast, her eyes are strikingly violet, and she has a long prehensile tail. Dylan soon begins to suspect that there's a lot more to Trance than she lets on. At times, he's not even sure if the form she presents is real, or some kind of sophisticated illusion. Whatever Trance's background, it's clear that she's had to survive on her wits for years. As a result, she's tough, resourceful, good in a scrape, and a little anti-social. She can be selfish, greedy and irresponsible, but she's got a vulnerable side she tries to hide. Trance loves plants and animals and nothing delights her quite so much as investigating a new form of life… and making it into her pet. In fact, though no one realizes it, that's exactly how she sees the crew of the Andromeda. As pets. She's actually from a civilization far more advanced than any Dylan or the others have ever encountered. Much more intelligent than she lets on, she feels as superior to her compatriots as we would to a troop of chimpanzees. The behavior of the Andromeda's crew both amuses and astounds her, and she truly enjoys being around them. She also feels very protective towards them, and feels it's her responsibility, as a superior life form, to insure that no harm befalls them. If only they'd stop poking their noses into places where they don't belong. Beka originally hired Trance to work as her ship's life support officer. She continues to serve that function on the Andromeda, as well as working as the crew's botanist, xenobiologist, make-do medic, and, when necessary, spy and thief. |
